Van Hunt Releases Disruptive Album

Posted by funkatop On September - 27 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

Van Hunt - What Were You Hoping For?“I want this album to be disruptive”, was the statement from Van Hunt regarding his pending album release What Were You Hoping For? that has now finally hit the shelves and in reality, that’s exactly what it was. Disruptive.

Two years ago, Van Hunt was signed to the world renowned Blue Note Records, but they simply did not share his vision for the risks that he chose to take musically and shelved his Popular Machine album (the link is to an EP of the album), which many consider his groundbreaking work.  WWYHF was musically next in line after Popular Machine, but for fans of Van Hunt that didn’t get to hear the Popular Machine album, this will be drastically removed from his last official major label release of On The Jungle Floor that saw him experiencing some of his most commercial success.  And it’s way removed from his very successful solo album Van Hunt that showcased two hits for him with Down Here In Hell (With You) and the R&B hit Dust that earned him a Grammy nod in 2005.

Van probably believed that he had already catered to the commercial audience as the “man behind the curtain” writing songs for Dionne Ferris (Hopeless), touring with everyone from Mary J. Blige to The Roots, and even a collaboration with John Legend and Joss Stone on the remake of Sly Stone’s Family Affair which earned him a Grammy win in 2006.

But instead of succumbing to the requests of a major label and going the way that most commercial artists strive for, he decided to follow his desire to create something that he had never heard before. To take all of the influences that have embedded themselves into his psyche and mash it together into an inexplicable genre that borders on psychedelia topped off with tons of distortion, effects, excerpts, funk, punk and rock.  But the results may be too far gone for people to wrap their heads around.

Commercially, this album will most likely never see the light of day. Not for the limited distribution of the album via Red Distribution through the Godless Hotspot label, but simply because it’s almost impossible to categorize it.  Even songs that have some semblance of order, seem to go off on various tangents that don’t maintain any continuity. Very simply put, Van was only concerned with pleasing himself and for a musician that’s as it should be.  You can only hope that people share your vision, but it will be far fetched to find someone in tune with the maddening beauty that is What were You Hoping For? He even addresses this lyrically by saying, “Give them what they want, and they’ll only want more.”  The problem here being that people might not buy it if it’s not what they want. We’re wondering if he even cares.

Van HuntWWYHF
is a beautiful mess. The opening track of North Hollywood seems as if it’s found an off-kilter beat to settle into and then jettisons off unexpectedly into a hard John Bonham style drum rock bash. The continuity of every song that follows is only threaded together with surprises as if every possible idea that floated in his head was placed onto the album.  The ballad of Falls (Violet) can’t even stay calm long enough before breaking off into a poppy tune. The following song Moving Targets stays relaxed long enough to qualify as the albums one true ballad, but even it feels like the instrumentation wants to break free to sprint towards the finish line.   A Time Machine Is My New Girlfriend is reminiscent of where Van left off with his punk-pop sensibilities that most got a sense of on the On The Jungle Floor album with the song At The End of a Slow Dance that seemed completely out of place where some even wondered if it was the same artist.

But what’s more curious here is that Van has decided to make a lot more controversial statements than he has in the past. Lyrics such as “I asked for a taste of Jesus’ Blood because it tastes just like grape juice.” from Watching You Go Crazy Is Driving Me Insane and even racial undertones such as “It’s the end of ‘white flight’. Can’t afford to live around the people you like.” on the title track What Were You Hoping For? that he says is about the plight of society that complains about where they are while not even considering that it’s a direct result of the decisions we’ve made as a society. What did you expect the outcome to be? What were you hoping for?

All in all, newcomers to Van Hunt will have no idea what to make of this offering, but then again neither do die-hard Van Hunt fans. Some who followed his transition during and after the Blue Note fiasco including buying into his independent release of Use In Case of Emergency that showcased mostly outtakes, saw this coming. At least those fans knew that this album was going to be unfettered madness directly reflective of his musical genius.  In the process however, he abandoned the audience that rewarded him for his R&B masterpieces and then alienated the commercial path that brought him Grammy nominations and awards.  All of which he exchanged for his musical freedom to do what he wanted to.

While there’s freedom in his decision, it shouldn’t be surprising to him when this album struggles to find an audience. There’s a lot of truth to his statement that he was attempting to record an album that he had never heard before, but he should also expect the consequences of that.  From a funk perspective, we can only give it 3 out of 5 stars for the very fact that it’s filled with brilliant songs that are way ahead of their time. Outside of the funk realm, it may very well take 4 out of 5 stars even though it would leave some from the outside scratching their heads.

If you’re a hardcore Van Hunt fan, your frustration level is about to peak. We all want to see him succeed and be noticed by the general public for his musical prowess, but he’s not willing to make any concessions. There is something amazing in that very fact that he isn’t willing to compromise his integrity about his musical direction, wants and desires. The problem is that he makes no apologies and it’s commercial suicide.  Guess we’re all along for the ride…because we ain’t getting out of the car and after you take a listen, you won’t want to get out either. A gorgeous risky journey.

Legendary Funk Man Sly Stone Is Homeless

Sly Stone Posing With a Taser

According to reports, funk singer Sly Stone of Sly and The Family Stone is homeless and living out of his van. Apparently his money woes began back in 1989 when he signed a “bad” contract with his manager Jerry Goldstein where Jerry would collect the royalties, do the legwork and then issue Sly a weekly check. The problems continued when Michael Jackson purchased his publishing rights for $1 million in 1984 back when Michael was on a buying frenzy that then graduated with buying The Beatles publishing rights from underneath Paul McCartney‘s nose.

Then it proceeded to get worse when Sly released this year’s album I’m Back! Family and Friends which essentially was yet another greatest hits collection with a couple of new songs.  It flopped if for no other reason that funk fanatics awaiting his new material were essentially fed up with supporting different versions of the same songs.

As you can see from these photos taken by John Chapple from the New York Post, Sly Stone is now living out of a Winnebago as his money woes have pushed him out of his Napa Valley home and into homelessness.  The entire situation is very sad, since Sly has always been very generous to his friends giving them cars and cash and now those friends seem to have disappeared. A phenomenon that’s been told, sung and rapped about for many years by many artists of the mysterious phantom friends that appear when you have money and then vanish when you don’t.

Needless to say, none of this is really surprising given that part of Sly’s demise is self inflicted with his constant drug use, refusal to write any new material, refusal to do interviews, refusal to play any live shows with cohesive performances, and the outright disdain for, well, everyone.  While we’ve accepted his musical genius and the quirks that come with that genius, he has to alter his reality if he plans to come out the other end.  We do not want to read about finding him dead in his van a couple of months down the road and his current outlook isn’t bright and cheery.

Sly Stone Living In His Van

He has requested to do more work, however, telling press, “Let these guys know, like Lady Gaga, let me come in, just let me come in and pay me if you like it.”, he requests.  If he has so much to offer, where was it when his new album was in the works for almost 20 years? It’s just a shame that he has to be, as The Fixx so eloquently put it years ago, saved by zero.  If his hitting rock bottom is his motivation for writing new material, then so be it. He simply can’t expect that royalties from songs that are now over 4 decades old will continue to pay the bills.

He is currently suing Jerry Goldstein for $50 million as a result of mismanagement of those royalties and while we hope his legal battles are warranted, the public has only seen his undoing at the slight of his own hands. We wish him the best, but part of that process is going to be to repair things internally or else he’ll be right back in his Winnebago.  We only want the best for Sly, but he needs to get better and he needs to face up to his realities.

Jamie Foxx’s Thunder Soul Brings Funk To The Movies

Posted by funkatop On September - 26 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

As funk fanatics, we about had an orgasm when Pulp Fiction’s opening credits blared Jungle Boogie over the speakers. And while we couldn’t force ourselves to watch the disaster of a movie Bending All the Rules, the soundtrack was awesome, even though you can’t purchase it. Seriously, do NOT rent that movie, it’s the worst movie ever. Luckily for us, we now have a new funk movie to enjoy that actually will have you moving and grooving in your seat and even better it’s not background fodder.

The movie is called Thunder Soul and it’s a true story of a high school band named Thunder Soul that filmmaker Mark Landsman took the time to put into a documentary form from classic footage of the 1970′s project along with the reunion that took place getting more of the members together to recreate it. Jamie Foxx’s manager saw the film at an LA Film festival and got a copy to Jamie who immediately put his stamp of approval on it which gave the film a boost of visibility that it didn’t previously have. Not to mention that it walked away with the 2010 Audience Award for Best Feature Documentary at the SXSW Film Festival.

Watch the trailer below, get excited and go see it now!

Funky September Concerts in Atlanta, GA

Posted by funkatop On September - 3 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

Here are the funky concerts happening in Atlanta during the month of September and we are funking it up!

September 2011

UPDATED!!
Soul Food Music Festival featuring George Clinton & Parliament, Zapp Band, Shirley Murdock, Jonathan Butler, Midnight Starr, Rick James Stone City Band & More!

When: September 3, 2011
Where: Wolf Creek Amphitheater in Atlanta, GA
Price: $25 General Admission – Get tickets here.
Funk-o-meter Level: 5 out of 5
Comments: The original location was set for Stone Mountain, but has since been moved to the Wolf Creek Amphitheater. Our guess is that Stone Mountain refused to charge more than $10 a car.  So they moved the event to the Wolf Creek Amphitheater and added an amazing amount of talent to the docket that pushed the Funk-o-Meter to 5 out of 5!  This will be one of the first appearances in Georgia for Parliament since the passing of Gary “Diaperman” Shider who was an integral part of their performance, but we’re sure that it will live up to all expectations. Now they’ve added Midnight Starr, Zapp Band and a bunch more performers and the funk quotient is on overload!

Isley Brothers featuring Ron & Ernie and El DeBarge
When: September 3, 2011
Where: Chastain Amphitheater in Atlanta, GA
Price: $35-$55 plus the fees – Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: 3 out of 5
Comments: The Isley Brthers have brought us MANY funky moments, but their concerts span many genres of music and that’s what we’ve always loved about them.  You have to love the band that brought you That Lady, Fight the Power, brother Brother and the classic Twist & Shout. Here’s your chance to see them live and enjoy it. It doesn’t max out the Funk-o-Meter, but a great show nonetheless. Not to mention that El DeBarge has been added to the docket to make it even slightly more funky.

Men of Soul and En Vogue (aka the White Linen Concert)
When: September 3, 2011 at 7:30pm
Where: Georgia International Horse Park in Conyers, GA
Price: $35 general admission (advance), $50 general admission (day of show), $65 VIP Table seats – Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: 2.5 out of 5
Comments: What? Only 2.5? Sorry. No real funk bands here, but for the R&B and Soul crowd, you’re getting an amazing collection of artists here. The show features En Vogue (Free Your Mind, Whatta man), Jeffrey Osborne (On the Wings Of Love, You Should Be Mine -The Woo Woo song), Peabo Bryson (Tonight I Celebrate My Love, If Ever You’re In My Arms Again), and Freddie Jackson (You Are My Lady, Nice N Slow).  Talk about an insane date night concert. If you can’t take your relationship to the next level attending this concert, you’re really doing something very wrong. Collectively the performers bring dozens of hits to the airwaves over the last 2 or 3 decades. If soul is your thing, this is your show.

Robert Randolph & The Family Band
When: September 14, 2011
Where: Georgia Theater in Athens, GA
Price: $20 (plus $4 in fees) – Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: 3 out of 5
Comments: If you missed the free show earlier, you can’t go wrong with Robert Randolph. They are truly a tour de force and amazingly fun and energetic. A funky jam band that will give you your money’s worth for sure.

Mother’s Finest
When:
September 17, 2011
Where:
Wild Bill’s in Duluth, GA
Price:
$15 adv ga / $25 at the door / $50 seat at a table / $100 vip
(Watch the Wild Bill’s site for more tickets details)
Funk-o-meter Level: 3 out of 5
Comments:
For anyone that has been in Atlanta over 20 years, you already know the impact that Mother’s Finest has had on the music industry in the Southeast. Tonight they get inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame and to celebrate afterwards they will be doing a concert at a great club in Gwinnett county called Wild Bill’s.  This is going to be an amazing show.

Earth, Wind and Fire
When: September 23, 2011
Where: Chastain Park Amphitheater in Atlanta, GA
Price: $25-$99 (plus ridiculous Ticketmaster fees) – Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: 4 out of 5
Comments: Not much that needs to be said about Earth, Wind and Fire’s contribution to the funk genre. They are some of the purveyors of horny funk. A must see.

Angie Stone & Raheem Devaughn: Black is Beautiful Tour 2011
When: September 23, 2011
Where: Atlanta Civic Center in Atlanta, GA
Price: $45-$80 (plus ridiculous Ticketmaster fees) - Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: 3 out of 5
Comments: Wouldn’t want to compete my ticket dollars against Earth, Wind and Fire the same night, but we’re guessing this will be separate genres of audience. A good show nonetheless although ranking lower on the Funk-o-Meter for obvious reasons.

Black Star (Mos Def and Talib Kweli)
When: September 28, 2011
Where: Tabernacle in Atlanta, GA
Price: $32.50 plus LiveNation fees - Get tickets here.
Funk-o-meter Level: 3.5 out of 5
Comments: Many people (including us) have been awaiting for this show forever.  The duo of Talib Kweli and Mos Def appears at The Tabernacle. We get that this is a hip-hop show, but you can’t deny the power of the two of these rhyme aficionados and under one roof and backed by some of the best musicians and DJ’s around. It’s going to be insane.

Prince Hit With Smelly $4 Million Lawsuit

Posted by funkatop On September - 3 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

3121 Prince perfumeBack in 2006, Prince released one of his best albums in a long time with the launch of his funky 3121. Along with that album was to be a fragrant perfume by the same name (which can be purchased here) created by Revelations Perfume and Cosmetics Inc.

Revelations spent $2.5 million to license the product including agreeing to give up 50% of the profits. In return, Prince would promote the 3121 perfume via interviews and various promotions including in-store appearances. But Prince failed to do either and now is faced with millions of dollars he’ll have to pay out if the judgment is confirmed.

What’s unusual about the case is that Revelations was asking for $100,000 in damages, but according to the New York Journal the judge awarded them $3.9 million to cover expenditures and that will be substantially more if the 2nd judge approves.  Now Prince’s lawyers are finally responding to fight that amount.

Since July 2007, despite repeated attempts by Revelations there have been virtually no communications from anyone who could commit to or coordinate any promotional efforts by Prince.” the suit states.

Simply put, Revelations hands were forced to cancel the licensing agreement since they couldn’t meet minimum sales requirements because of Prince’s lack of support.

All we can say is that Prince is a lawsuit magnet.
