Funk Concerts and Events In and Around Atlanta

What’s the Funk-o-Meter? Scroll to the bottom for the full explanation..

June 2013 (What’s left of…)

Marc Broussard, Soia Leigh and Ben Deignan

When: June 22, 2013
Where: Atlantic Station Central Park in Atlanta, GA
Price: About $25 to $125 . Get tickets here.
Funk-o-meter Level: 2.5 out of 5
Comments: If funk and blues had a baby, this would be the offspring. It’s super bluesy soul with funk tinges and it’ll be a lot of fun.

July 2013

Summer Soul Jam w/ The Stylistics, Manhattans, Heatwave, Harold Melvin’s Blue Notes, Peaches & Herb, Main Ingredient, hosed by Jimmie Walker
When: July 10, 2013
Where: Chastain Amphitheater in Atlanta, GA
Price: About $36 to $72 with fees. Get tickets here.
Funk-o-meter Level: 3 out of 5
Comments: Not sure how they plan to pull off this laundry list of artists, but it’s sure to have some funky moments.

Heads of State with Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill, Ralph Tresvant, Color Me Badd, After 7 and Al B. Sure
When: July 13, 2013
Where: Chastain Amphitheater in Atlanta, GA
Price: About $41 to $82 with fees. Get tickets here.
Funk-o-meter Level: 3 out of 5
Comments: The Ticketmaster site makes no mention of Bobby Brown, Johnny or Ralph, but the Chastain site and ad pieces do. Check it. Another festival with a wealth of acts from back in the day. Should be interesting. These shows always have more moments than you think they do.

Swing Out Sister
When: July 16, 2013
Where: Variety Playhouse in Atlanta, GA
Price: $35 advance, $40 day of. Get tickets here.
Funk-o-meter Level: 2.5 out of 5
Comments: A little surprised that Swing Out Sister are still pumping out shows considering that their only claim to fame is one song Breakout in 1986. But even more surprised that they’re charging $40 for you to be able to see it. They’re still very good (so we’ve heard) and this tour is the 25th anniversary of that album (It’s Time To Travel) and they think that you’ll feel that it’s worth it. Let us know.

Jill Scott w/ Raheem DeVaughn
When: July 18, 2013
Where: Chastain Amphitheater in Atlanta, GA
Price: Unknown. Just announced at part of Chastain series.
Funk-o-meter Level: 3 out of 5
Comments: Jill doesn’t tap out the funk-o-meter, but she is incredible and we love her and we know you do too. Go to get to this show.

Living Colour
When: July 19, 2013
Where: Variety Playhouse in Atlanta, GA (Little Five Points)
Price: $27 with fees.  Get tickets here.
Funk-o-meter Level3 out of 5
Comments: Living Colour hits the road to support the 25th anniversary of their huge commercial success Vivid. They plan to play the album in its entirety including the chart smashing Cult of Personality. The album only clocks in at about 48 minutes, so we’re hoping they have more planned than just that. Hmmmm.

David Ryan Harris
When: July 24, 2013
Where: Smith’s Olde Bar in Atlanta, GA
Price: $20 in advance/$25 dayof.  Get tickets here.
Funk-o-meter Level: 2.5 out of 5
Comments: For those who have been in the ATL for 20+ years, you may recall  super funky regional act called Follow For Now. David Ryan Harris was the lead vocalist for that project and he’s doing his solo act once again to support his many solo albums that have happened since those days of yore. He doesn’t have a weak solo album to his name and he’s a great entertainer when not filling in on guitar for a gazillion acts including Atlanta’s own John Mayer.

August 2013

Bruno Mars with Fitz and the Tantrums
When: August 22, 2013
Where: Phillip’s Arena in Atlanta, GA
Price: About $45 to $110 with fees. Get tickets here.
Funk-o-meter Level: 2.5 out of 5
Comments: Bruno Mars comes to Atlanta with his funky brand of pop. While his antics may please the top 40-ites, we still want more funk.

Cheech and Chong, War and Tower of Power
When: August 23, 2013
Where: Chastain Amphitheater in Atlanta, GA
Price: About $36 to $72 with fees. Get tickets here.
Funk-o-meter Level: 3 out of 5
Comments: War and Tower of Power are amazing live. We’re not sure what the tie-in with Cheech and Chong may be, but it’ll be funky.

Rebirth Brass Band
When: August 23 and 24th, 2013
Where: Smith’s Olde Bar in Atlanta, GA
Price: $20 in advance, $25 the day of. Get tickets here for the 23rd and here for the 24th.
Funk-o-meter Level: 3 out of 5
Comments: Rebirth Brass Band is incredibly funky. Just go to one of the nights.

December 2013

Justin Timberlake, 20/20 Experience Tour
When: December 17, 2013
Where: Philips Arena in Atlanta, GA
Price: About $58 to $206 with fees. Get tickets here.
Funk-o-meter Level: 3.5 out of 5
Comments: We love Justin and this falls way more in line with pop than funk, but it will still be a great show.

A Word about the Funk-O-Meter

The funk-o-meter indicates just how funky the show will be and that’s the indicator you’d use to determine if the show will be funky enough for you.  Rated 1 through 5. Funk-o-meter Level 1 - A show that’s a good show, but not really funk in any way. But still groovy enough.  Sade would fit here. Funk-o-meter Level 2 - A show with quite a bit of funk elements, but the artist is not a funk artist. They just have funky moments. Lil Wayne would fit here. Funk-o-meter Level 3 - A funky show but more old school leaning and mixed with R&B or Soul elements.  Jill Scott would fit here. Funk-o-meter Level 4 - A show with heavy doses of funk. Prince would fit here. Funk-o-meter Level 5 - The ultimate funk show. If you love funk, you MUST be at this show. Parliament Funkadelic would fit here.
