Concerts

Posted by funkatop On June - 28 - 2011

Since we’re based in Atlanta, we keep our eyes out for events and concerts in and around the Atlanta area. If you’re not in Atlanta, you have other options here, such as;

Funk Concerts and Events In and Around Atlanta

What’s the Funk-o-Meter? Scroll to the bottom for the full explanation..

So if someone can explain why there are no funk concerts in January 2012, that would be awesome.  Talk about a dry winter!

February 2012

Yelawolf
When: February 4, 2012
Where: Wild Bill’s in Duluth, GA
Price: $15-$100 – General Admission through reserved seating – (plus junky Ticketmaster fees)- Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: 2 out of 5
Comments: Not quite grasping Yelawolf at Wild Bill’s but it’s a nice club to see acts at and the beer girls are purty. Yelawolf is always crunked up, but the grooves are tight. A bit angry for our tastes.

Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds with Eric Benet
When: February 10, 2012
Where: Atlanta Civic Center in Atlanta, GA
Price: $60-$80 (plus junky Ticketmaster fees)- Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: 1 out of 5
Comments: We loved Babyface just like everyone else, but $60-$80 and fees on top of that? Sorry, but we wouldn’t have paid that kind of dough even in your heyday and certainly not now. But we know that you crazed fans with Whip Appeal are out there, so here you go.

Musiq Soulchild
When: February 10, 2012
Where: King Chapel at Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA
Price: $20 for students (sold on campus only), $30 General Admission or $50 for VIP - Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: 3 out of 5
Comments: Musiq Soulchild does a great show. I was lucky enough to be his chaffeur for an entire day a few years back. The guys amazing. And this is definitely the better pick between this or the Babyface show, if not only for the admission cost. For $10 less, you can sit VIP at this show.

Javier Colon
When: February 14, 2012
Where: Variety Playhouse in Atlanta, GA
Price: $30.50 General Admission - Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: 2.5 out of 5
Comments: If you watched the last season of The Voice, you know that this guy has an amazing voice. He won the entire competition hands down and rightfully so. His mix of R&B and pop is well worth watching and the songwriters at his disposal are extra ordinary. We like.

Fishbone
When: February 15, 2012
Where: The Masquerade in Atlanta, GA
Price: $15 General Admission - Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: 3 out of 5
Comments: Fishbone is an amazing funk rock band that has been around for decades. they’re loud, obnoxious and could give a rat’s ass whether you like them or not. They’ll keep playing as long people buy tickets. And if we were you, we’d buy tickets. We’re going to make sure we go just to snap photos of the show and maybe score another exclusive interview for our readers.

Idle Warship w/ Talib Kweli & Res
When: February 16, 2012
Where: The Loft in Atlanta, GA
Price: $20 General Admission - Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: 3 out of 5
Comments: Talib Kweli is a very busy dude. Idle Warship is one of his newer projects that mixes hip hop and soul in a way that only Talib can do it. This will be a great show and a pretty nice place to see shows up close and personal.

Estelle
When: February 20, 2012
Where: Center Stage in Atlanta, GA
Price: $24 (plus junky Ticketmaster fees)- Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: 3 out of 5
Comments: Estelle is more soul and R&B than funk, but she fits in the funky realm right alongside Erykah Badu or Jill Scott, so we’ll give her the benefit of the doubt. It will be a night of sweet grooves.

Tyga
When: February 20, 2012
Where: The Masquerade in Atlanta, GA
Price: $25 (plus junky Ticketmaster fees)- Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: 2 out of 5
Comments: Tyga is a newcomer to the rap realm and has a lot in common with Lupe Fiasco as far as style and flow are concerned. This tour is to support his new album Careless Word.

Notable Concert (Notable concerts are shows that would be cool to see, but aren’t really funk or R&B.)
Kelly Clarkson

When: February 23, 2012
Where: Fox Theater in Atlanta, GA
Price: $29.50-$49.50 (plus junky Ticketmaster fees)- Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: Notable Concerts don’t get graded. You should see them anyway.
Comments: If you’ve listened to the radio at all in the past 6 years, you know who she is. Do you really need a description?

Dwele
When: February 25, 2012
Where: Center Stage in Atlanta, GA
Price: $25 (plus junky Ticketmaster fees)- Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: 3 out of 5
Comments: Dwele has a style and flow all his own. His name is synonomous with R&B these days when he got a much needed boost from some McDonald’s TV spots a couple years back. Since then, he’s been the one to watch for R&B with that Bilal, Van Hunt type of avant garde edge.

March 2012

Diana Ross
When: March 1, 2012
Where: Fox Theater in Atlanta, GA
Price: $45-$100 (plus junky Ticketmaster fees)- Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: 3 out of 5
Comments: Do you really need comments here? It’s Diana!

Notable Concert (Notable concerts are shows that would be cool to see, but aren’t really funk or R&B.)
Chubby Checker

When: March 3, 2012
Where: Anderson Theater in Marietta, GA
Price: $40 (plus junky Ticketmaster fees)- Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: Notable Concerts don’t get graded. You should see them anyway.
Comments: Chubby Checker brought us many classics that have lasted through generations like The Twist. We’re not sure how many years Chubby has got left in him, but some say this may be one of the last opportunities you get to see the legend in concert.

Aretha Franklin
When: March 5, 2012
Where: Fox Theater in Atlanta, GA
Price: $60-$150 (plus junky Ticketmaster fees)- Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: 3 out of 5
Comments: Do you really need comments here? It’s Aretha!

Trey Songz w/ Big Sean
When: March 5, 2012
Where: Fox Theater in Atlanta, GA
Price: $47-$102 (plus junky Ticketmaster fees)- Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: 3 out of 5
Comments: You can’t go to a club and not hear one or both of these artists. Should be a good show, but a little on the pricey side for good seats.

Notable Concert (Notable concerts are shows that would be cool to see, but aren’t really funk or R&B.)
Elton John and His Band

When: March 6, 2012
Where: James Brown Theater in Augusta, GA
Price: $49, $79 & $139 (plus junky Ticketmaster fees)- Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: Notable Concerts don’t get graded. You should see them anyway.
Comments: Really? You need us to comment on Elton John? Get your tickets and hit the road!

Notable Concert (Notable concerts are shows that would be cool to see, but aren’t really funk or R&B.)
The Pink Floyd Experience

When: March 9, 2012
Where: Variety Playhouse in Atlanta, GA
Price: $28.50 (plus junky Ticketmaster fees)- Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: Notable Concerts don’t get graded. You should see them anyway.
Comments: Light ‘em if you got ‘em. We’ve seen this show on PBS and it’s a great sounding rendition that stays true to Pink Floyd’s music and stage show note for note.

Keith Sweat
When: March 10, 2012
Where: Albany Civic Center in Albany, GA
Price: $39-$49 (plus junky Ticketmaster fees)- Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: 2.5 out of 5
Comments: Keith Sweat ruled R&B radio in the 80′s and 90′s, but he’s continuously released albums ever since every 2-3 years with exception to a 5 year hiatus a few years back. But his fans are still out there and if you’re looking for a perfect date night concert, this is it. Even though it’s in Albany.

Notable Concert (Notable concerts are shows that would be cool to see, but aren’t really funk or R&B.)
Experience Hendrix

When: March 10, 2012
Where: Fox Theater in Atlanta, GA
Price: $41.50-$61.50 (plus junky Ticketmaster fees)- Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: Notable Concerts don’t get graded. You should see them anyway.
Comments: A full blown tribute to Jimi Hendrix complete with amazing music, memorabilia and the most fun a guitarist could have in one place. At The Fox, no less.

Childish Gambino
When: March 16, 2012
Where: The Tabernacle in Atlanta, GA
Price: $25 (plus junky Ticketmaster fees)- Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: 2 out of 5
Comments: Childish Gambino is the newest entry in the realm of hip hop that stormed onto the scene.  Not sure how these bands are exploding onto the charts out of nowhere, but it’s happening and most of them are really good.

Notable Concert (Notable concerts are shows that would be cool to see, but aren’t really funk or R&B.)
Brusce Springsteen & The E Street Band

When: March 18, 2012
Where: Phillips Arena in Atlanta, GA
Price: $65-$95 (plus junky Ticketmaster fees)- Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: Notable Concerts don’t get graded. You should see them anyway.
Comments: Are you serious? It’s BRUUUUCE! Everyone love Bruce. There is that small question about who will be slated to fill the shoes of the sorely missed Clarence Clemons, but it will be an amazing show nonetheless.

Notable Concert (Notable concerts are shows that would be cool to see, but aren’t really funk or R&B.)
Moody Blues

When: March 24, 2012
Where: Fox Theater in Atlanta, GA
Price: $46.50-$76.50 (plus junky Ticketmaster fees)- Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: Notable Concerts don’t get graded. You should see them anyway.
Comments: Moody Blues have given us generations worth of music with tunes from Ride My Seesaw to Knights in White Satin, they’ve done it all. You can expect an amazing show here.

Odd Future
When: March 25, 2012
Where: The Tabernacle in Atlanta, GA
Price: $25 (plus junky Ticketmaster fees)- Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: 2.5 out of 5
Comments: Expect lots of crunky mayhem and loud abrasive action as Odd Future comes back to town yet again. This is their 2nd appearance here in less than 3 months. But as the members break off into their splinter cells, you could expect to see a lot of them throughout the year since many of the crew have family here in the ATL.

Maze featuring Frankie Beverly w/ The Whispers and Tank
When: March 31, 2012
Where: Macon Centerplex Coliseum in Macon, GA
Price: $38-$58 (plus junky Ticketmaster fees)- Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: 2.5 out of 5
Comments: Maze has been around forever and they never stop touring. But they always do the same exact show year after year, so if you’re not in the Macon area, but love Maze, just sit tight. They’ll be in town at some point with the same performance you’ve come to love. Hey, when you got a winning formula, why mess it up?

April 2012

Chaka Khan
When: April 4, 2012
Where: Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Marietta, GA
Price: $53-$98 (plus junky Ticketmaster fees)- Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: 4 out of 5
Comments: We had to really think about giving this such a high funky mark because we’re not sure what this concert will bring. But there’s no denying Chaka’s offering to the funk world, so we can’t give it any less than 4. And Cobb Energy will be an amazing place to see her.

Van Hunt
When: April 6, 2012
Where: The Earl in Atlanta, GA
Price: Unannounced
Funk-o-meter Level: 3 out of 5
Comments: Van is one of our favorites. His last album What Were You Hoping For? left many scratching their heads including us. But one thing is for sure, Van Hunt is a blast in concert. Expect a lot of raw energy and a good dose of his older tunes mixed in for good measure.

Hip Hop Gods Tour with Public Enemy, MC Lyte, EPMD, Kool Moe D, & Black Sheep
When: April 7, 2012
Where: Atlanta Civic Center in Atlanta, GA
Price: $45-$74 (plus junky Ticketmaster fees)- Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: 3 out of 5
Comments: We got the grand opportunity to see Public Enemy at a very small club last month with a crowd of less than 100, so for us, this would be a killjoy. But if we get invited to cover the show for you, we’ll be there. But if you haven’t seen PE or any of the other acts on this bill, we’d highly suggest going. It’s always amazing. And Public Enemy will play as long as you’re making noise. A great show for sure!

Galactic
When: April 19, 2012
Where: Variety Playhouse in Atlanta, GA
Price: $23 (plus junky Ticketmaster fees)- Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: 4 out of 5
Comments: Galactic is a very funky band that has a cult following like no other and any time they make an appearance in your town, you should make it a point to see them. New Orleans funk at some of its best.

Notable Concert (Notable concerts are shows that would be cool to see, but aren’t really funk or R&B.)
Van Halen (featuring David Lee Roth)

When: March 19, 2012
Where: Phillip’s Arena in Atlanta, GA
Price: $29.50-$149.50 (plus junky Ticketmaster fees)- Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: Notable Concerts don’t get graded. You should see them anyway.
Comments: Van Halen brought the world a truckload of amazing music and most of it under the direction of the showman himself David Lee Roth including Panama, Jump, Running With The Devil, and tons more. Now he’s back behind the mike in the position that no one has been able to fill right since his departure. But Phillips Arena? I think that may be a tad delusional if they think they’ll fill Phillip’s. Ought to be a good show anyway. No, no. A GREAT show.

May 2012

New Edition with Erykah Badu
When: May 18th and 19th, 2012
Where: Wolf Creek Amphitheater in College Park, GA
Price: $55-$75 (and a $655 pass?) (plus junky Ticketmaster fees)- Friday Tix here ($55-$75)Saturday Tix here ($55-$75), 2 day pass here
Funk-o-meter Level: 3 out of 5
Comments: We haven’t seen New Edition since the 80′s so we have no idea what’s going to happen here. All 6 members are there to perform including Bobby. Surpringly, Erykah Badu opens up the show, which is super-silly. Erykah is what brings the funk-o-meter up to 3. But even more strange is that they have some 2 day pass thing that cost $655. No joke. But they show up as all fees on the Ticketmaster site. there has to be something wrong with that page.

August 2012

Kiss 104 Flashback Festival featuring A Taste Of Honey, Larry Graham, Keith Sweat, Whodini & Loose Ends
When: August 11th, 2012
Where: Aaron’s Amphitheater in Atlanta, GA
Price: $25-$60  (plus junky Ticketmaster fees)- Tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: 3 out of 5
Comments: We love the Flashback Festival that Kiss 104 does every year. We finally got a date on the event, but we don’t have a full list of bands playing this year. But it’s always good, so we’re not worried.

A Word about the Funk-O-Meter

The funk-o-meter indicates just how funky the show will be and that’s the indicator you’d use to determine if the show will be funky enough for you.  Rated 1 through 5.

Funk-o-meter Level 1 - A show that’s a good show, but not really funk in any way. But still groovy enough.  Sade would fit here.
Funk-o-meter Level 2 - A show with quite a bit of funk elements, but the artist is not a funk artist. They just have funky moments. Lil Wayne would fit here.
Funk-o-meter Level 3 - A funky show but more old school leaning and mixed with R&B or Soul elements.  Jill Scott would fit here.
Funk-o-meter Level 4 - A show with heavy doses of funk. Prince would fit here.
Funk-o-meter Level 5 - The ultimate funk show. If you love funk, you MUST be at this show. Parliament Funkadelic would fit here.
