Interview: Jerry Hubbard
When music fans are blinded by the singer that takes the center mike, but pays no attention to the players behind them, it’s a huge disservice to their ability to truly appreciate the music fully. Jerry Hubbard was one of those band members who quietly flourished in the background of some of the most iconic bands from the Minneapolis area and before, during and after the world dominating phenomenon that was Purple Rain.
Growing up in the streets of North Minneapolis, Jerry Hubbard walked among Prince, Morris Day, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, and many others. From playing bass with Alexander O’Neal, being the bassist for The Time in the Purple Rain film, working with Jesse Johnson including the groundbreaking Jesse Johnson’s Revue, Michael Jackson, and many others including being an original member of Prince‘s side project The Family.
There are many stories in this 2+ hour interview with a literal music legend in the Minnesota music scene supporting, writing, collaborating, and producing quietly in the shadows for his career and contributing to the foundation of the Minneapolis sound.
