Funky September Concerts in Atlanta, GA
Here are the funky concerts happening in Atlanta during the month of September and we are funking it up!
September 2011
UPDATED!!
Soul Food Music Festival featuring George Clinton & Parliament, Zapp Band, Shirley Murdock, Jonathan Butler, Midnight Starr, Rick James Stone City Band & More!
When: September 3, 2011
Where: Wolf Creek Amphitheater in Atlanta, GA
Price: $25 General Admission – Get tickets here.
Funk-o-meter Level: 5 out of 5
Comments: The original location was set for Stone Mountain, but has since been moved to the Wolf Creek Amphitheater. Our guess is that Stone Mountain refused to charge more than $10 a car. So they moved the event to the Wolf Creek Amphitheater and added an amazing amount of talent to the docket that pushed the Funk-o-Meter to 5 out of 5! This will be one of the first appearances in Georgia for Parliament since the passing of Gary “Diaperman” Shider who was an integral part of their performance, but we’re sure that it will live up to all expectations. Now they’ve added Midnight Starr, Zapp Band and a bunch more performers and the funk quotient is on overload!
Isley Brothers featuring Ron & Ernie and El DeBarge
When: September 3, 2011
Where: Chastain Amphitheater in Atlanta, GA
Price: $35-$55 plus the fees – Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: 3 out of 5
Comments: The Isley Brthers have brought us MANY funky moments, but their concerts span many genres of music and that’s what we’ve always loved about them. You have to love the band that brought you That Lady, Fight the Power, brother Brother and the classic Twist & Shout. Here’s your chance to see them live and enjoy it. It doesn’t max out the Funk-o-Meter, but a great show nonetheless. Not to mention that El DeBarge has been added to the docket to make it even slightly more funky.
Men of Soul and En Vogue (aka the White Linen Concert)
When: September 3, 2011 at 7:30pm
Where: Georgia International Horse Park in Conyers, GA
Price: $35 general admission (advance), $50 general admission (day of show), $65 VIP Table seats – Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: 2.5 out of 5
Comments: What? Only 2.5? Sorry. No real funk bands here, but for the R&B and Soul crowd, you’re getting an amazing collection of artists here. The show features En Vogue (Free Your Mind, Whatta man), Jeffrey Osborne (On the Wings Of Love, You Should Be Mine -The Woo Woo song), Peabo Bryson (Tonight I Celebrate My Love, If Ever You’re In My Arms Again), and Freddie Jackson (You Are My Lady, Nice N Slow). Talk about an insane date night concert. If you can’t take your relationship to the next level attending this concert, you’re really doing something very wrong. Collectively the performers bring dozens of hits to the airwaves over the last 2 or 3 decades. If soul is your thing, this is your show.
Robert Randolph & The Family Band
When: September 14, 2011
Where: Georgia Theater in Athens, GA
Price: $20 (plus $4 in fees) – Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: 3 out of 5
Comments: If you missed the free show earlier, you can’t go wrong with Robert Randolph. They are truly a tour de force and amazingly fun and energetic. A funky jam band that will give you your money’s worth for sure.
Mother’s Finest
When: September 17, 2011
Where: Wild Bill’s in Duluth, GA
Price: $15 adv ga / $25 at the door / $50 seat at a table / $100 vip
(Watch the Wild Bill’s site for more tickets details)
Funk-o-meter Level: 3 out of 5
Comments: For anyone that has been in Atlanta over 20 years, you already know the impact that Mother’s Finest has had on the music industry in the Southeast. Tonight they get inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame and to celebrate afterwards they will be doing a concert at a great club in Gwinnett county called Wild Bill’s. This is going to be an amazing show.
Earth, Wind and Fire
When: September 23, 2011
Where: Chastain Park Amphitheater in Atlanta, GA
Price: $25-$99 (plus ridiculous Ticketmaster fees) – Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: 4 out of 5
Comments: Not much that needs to be said about Earth, Wind and Fire’s contribution to the funk genre. They are some of the purveyors of horny funk. A must see.
Angie Stone & Raheem Devaughn: Black is Beautiful Tour 2011
When: September 23, 2011
Where: Atlanta Civic Center in Atlanta, GA
Price: $45-$80 (plus ridiculous Ticketmaster fees) – Get tickets here
Funk-o-meter Level: 3 out of 5
Comments: Wouldn’t want to compete my ticket dollars against Earth, Wind and Fire the same night, but we’re guessing this will be separate genres of audience. A good show nonetheless although ranking lower on the Funk-o-Meter for obvious reasons.
Black Star (Mos Def and Talib Kweli)
When: September 28, 2011
Where: Tabernacle in Atlanta, GA
Price: $32.50 plus LiveNation fees – Get tickets here.
Funk-o-meter Level: 3.5 out of 5
Comments: Many people (including us) have been awaiting for this show forever. The duo of Talib Kweli and Mos Def appears at The Tabernacle. We get that this is a hip-hop show, but you can’t deny the power of the two of these rhyme aficionados and under one roof and backed by some of the best musicians and DJ’s around. It’s going to be insane.
